Huaqing Palace, also called Huaqing Hot Springs, is a historic and cultural site at the foot of Mount Lishan in Shaanxi Province, China. The palace was first built during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BC) and was used as a royal residence for emperors and their concubines. However, it was during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) that Huaqing Palace gained its fame and significance. It was Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty who ordered the construction of the palace and turned it into a luxurious imperial resort. One of the most famous legends associated with Huaqing Palace is the love story of Emperor Xuanzong and his concubine, Yang Guifei. It is said that the emperor fell deeply in love with Yang Guifei and built a special palace for her within Huaqing Palace. The two would often spend time together in the hot springs, enjoying the beautiful scenery and each other's company. However, their love story came to a tragic end when Yang Guifei was falsely accused of causing a rebellion and was executed. It is said that the emperor was so heartbroken that he ordered the hot springs to be filled with wine and had a banquet with Yang Guifei's spirit. This event is known as the "Banquet of Wine and Tears" and is commemorated today at Huaqing Palace.
